Memorial Day (or less commonly called Decoration Day) is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering and honoring people who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.[1] The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May, was most recently held on May 28, 2018. Memorial Day was previously observed on May 30 from 1868 to 1970.

Memorial Day is considered the unofficial start of the summer vacation season in the United States, while Labor Day marks its end on the first Monday of September.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day, particularly to honor those who died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries.

Two other days celebrate those who serve or have served in the U.S. military: Veterans Day, which celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans; and Armed Forces Day, a minor U.S. remembrance celebrated earlier in May, specifically honoring those currently serving in the U.S. military.

In 2019, Memorial Day falls on May 27, 2019.

Most of those graves are filled with young men and women who died because of political greed and intractability.  Most were simply doing a job, not heroes but simply soldiers going and doing as they were told.

This weekend I will remember those who fell and raise a glass or two (of anything but cheap swill) and say, aloud or in my heart, thank you.

Today is the birthday of the first female astronaut, Sally Ride.

Ms. Ride had a PhD in physics from Stanford University and designed the robotic arm used on the space shuttles. She is the only person to have served on both boards of inquiry for Challenger and Columbia disasters. She was the author or coauthor of 7 books on space aimed toward children.

These are just some of her many accomplishments. Ms. Ride died of pancreatic cancer on July 23, 2012 at the age of 61.

She is the first known LGBT astronaut in NASA’s program. If that were known prior to her space flights they most likely would never had happened due to bigotry.

Ms. Ride deserves to be remembered on this Memorial Day.
