The death of actor Douglas Rain, voice of the villainous computer in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), occurred on November 11, aged 90. His obituary appeared in THE TIMES today. It is said he was a shy man and hated to be asked to give a rendition of the iconic, sinister, sentient computer. He did the entire part of HAL 9000 in about nine and a half hours over two days.

2001: A Space Odyssey makes it into the Top Ten list of the American Society of Cinematographers

Founded on January 8, 1919, the American Society of Cinematographers celebrates its 100th anniversary today. As part of the centennial festivities, the Society released their members’ list of the 100 milestone films in the art and craft of cinematography of the 20th century and 2001: A Space Odyssey made it into the Top 10 by number of members’ votes.
