The Australian prime minister, Scott Morrison, confirmed in a speech in Sydney on Saturday that his government recognizes West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The hypocrisy of the Australians, long defenders of the Israelis at the United Nations, is evident by its refusal to recognize East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine until after Israel allows Palestinians to have an independent state. The Australian government is applying a double standard to the Israel/Palestine conflict.

Israelis unhappy that Australian government recognizes only West Jerusalem as their capital

By specifying that East Jerusalem will be recognized as the capital of Palestine, the Australian government has bothered Israeli politicians. Publicly, the Israelis welcomed the Australian decision while one top official who preferred to remain anonymous said, “We’re disappointed with the Australian decision…[Prime Minister Scott] Morrison only went half-way. It’s a step in the right direction, but we expected more,” the official said.

Minister for Regional Cooperation Tzachi Hanegbi (Likud) tweeted: “Australia is a great friend of Israel and we greatly appreciate our friendship and warm relations. But there is no such thing as ‘West Jerusalem’ and ‘East Jerusalem.’ There is only Jerusalem, the eternal and undivided capital of the state of Israel.”

Pro-Zionist publication Arutz Sheva believes the recognition of only East Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is the right direction on “the road to hell hell” because “it entrenches the idea” of a divided city and this has never worked in history???

Only two cities are given as historical examples: Berlin and Belfast. Belfast??? Belfast was never a city divided between two sovereign states. That leaves us with Berlin which was successfully divided between The German Democratic Republic (GDR) and the three occupation forces of the USA, France, and Britain for four decades and would have remained so had not the Soviet Union imploded, taking the ground from under the GDR. If any lesson is to be learned here it is that West Jerusalem will remain as the capital of Israel until such time as the United States implodes or Israel itself under the weight of its sectarian apartheid regime.
