There is an area in Northern Bavaria that the Army uses for training called Grafenwoehr Training Area.  It was rugged and during the winter colder than a well digger’s ass.  (I have no idea how cold a well digger’s ass gets but from the idiom one would assume it’s mighty cold.)

We were billeted in old barracks that were drafty and had a lone coal stove in each section which did little to keep the cold out.  The area was polluted with coal smoke and all of us would go around coughing and hacking and spitting up black phlegm.

It was neither a pretty sight nor a pleasant experience.
